Autism, High Functioning Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD-NOS) and Asperger’s Syndrome are all disorders on the autism spectrum. It’s easiest to think of an autism spectrum disorder as a developmental or learning disability. The truth is all of these diagnoses are very different and we are still learning how to think about, differentiate and understand them; what causes them, what makes them worse, what helps.

Some common behaviors are shared by many individuals along the spectrum…

  • Difficulties with social interaction, especially with peers
  • Easily overwhelmed in high sensor/sensation environments
  • Rigid, inflexible thinking and behavior
  • Difficulties with language and social communication, especially conversation
  • Difficulties with emotional regulation

The current thinking is that the unusual behaviors in autism spectrum disorders are attempts to create balance and manage a world that often feels overwhelming due to difficulties that the brain and nervous system has in receiving, accommodating and processing social, sensory and emotional stimuli.
